Area Geology and History: The host rock in this area is iron formation from the Paleoproterozoic era 2.50 to 1.60 billion years ago. At one time the nearby Groveland Manganese Mine was part of the area known as the Menominee Iron Mining District of the Canadian Shield. It had one shaft that reached about 300 feet below the surface, and an area of surface workings. For decades, the complex produced Loads of pellets that were taken by train to Escanaba, then by ship to steel mills in Ohio. Some of the old mine infrastructure still stands. But the Michigan DNR, which now owns parts of the property, has a new vision for its future, a first-of-its-kind major solar array on DNR land. If the permitting and development go just right, the former mine site could be generating solar power by 2023. It could power 4,000 homes.
